Music is by its nature, an engaging and practical subject. The knowledge and understanding in the subject of music is taught through sequentially reflecting and responding by singing, listening, moving, playing instruments, creating, practicing and presenting.
At Maleny State School through classroom music lessons, instrumental lessons and extra-curricular Arts Performances we endeavour to develop the musicality of children so that, as members of our community, they might better be able to enjoy and be involved in music activities, or even, to adopt music as a career!
All students from Prep to Year 6 participate in weekly class music lessons. Students in Year Prep to Year Two develop their understanding of music concepts of rhythm, melody, dynamics and structure through their participation in a wide range of singing and movement games which are also designed to enhance the child’s overall social and emotional development. Throughout their time in the junior school the children are introduced to basic music notation and use percussion instruments including ‘boomwhackers’. Students in Year Three complete a unit playing the Ukulele while students in Year Four focus on recorder playing and beginning to read music staff notation. Students in Years five and six have the opportunity to apply their developing musical skills when learning the fundamentals on music keyboard, ‘humarimba’ and ukulele.
Maleny State School also has more information on our Extra-curricular music programs and events like the Musical.
