Generating Excellence for Maleny Students (G.E.M.S.)
Students who are gifted and talented in one or more domains are present in every school and can be found across all groups of learners. It is important that these students are identified and supported with appropriate programs and strategies. At Maleny State School, students who demonstrate talent in one or more key learning areas are extended to ensure they continue to achieve to their potential.
Generating Excellence for Maleny Students (G.E.M.S.) is a program designed to extend and challenge students’ learning. It is aimed at students from Year 2 to Year 6 who are achieving high academic results in specific key learning areas. Students are provided with activities to deepen their knowledge, understanding and skills on topics that they are learning in their classroom.
GEMS is provided in the following three key learning areas:
- Mathematics
- Writing
- Art
- Technology
The following criteria is used to assess a student’s eligibility for a GEMS program:
- Current NAPLAN banding (and / or)
- Achieving at ‘A’ or ‘B’ level in the specific key learning area (and or)
- A recommendation from the student’s classroom teacher.
