Lots of effort is being put in with staff and volunteers to get as many sight words under the kid’s belts so they have the best opportunity to make reading an easier task. A number of kids have made great strides in the last few weeks and months getting through various lists of sight words. To help with this I came across a new tablet only app (Android, iOS compatible) that the kids have already shown great interest in. The Squeebles Word Search app is proving popular already. The word search grids can be 8by8, 10by10 or 12by12 letters in size adding to the challenge.
If you have multiple children (like we obviously do in class) you can add each child individually so they can try and earn points. The word search challenges have been ‘gamified’ to add to the interest. Earning of points and unlocking game levels are all part of the word search fun.
This app not only provides some set lists (along with difficulty levels) but also allows for the creation of your own ‘Home’ lists that you can create yourself. I have been busy setting up class weekly spelling lists and sight word lists as well to allow the kids to hunt down the words in a fun and engaging way.
To have a look at the app and access the download links visit their website : https://keystagefun.co.uk/literacy-apps/squeebles-word-search/ They do have other apps but I have not had the chance yet to check these ones out to be able to recommend them.
Check out the vendor's demo video below to see how this app works.
