Scientist Dr Peter Stone from CSIRO, or ‘Scientist Pete’ visited Maleny Prep classes to help all the children learn about what it means to be a scientist. He explained what types of things he explores and has discovered as a scientist. The children were greatly excited to learn that he even makes his own ice-cream.
With the guidance of Scientist Pete, the children explored all about the properties of materials. The children then broke into groups to experiment on alfoil, paper and gladwrap, testing out their strength, absorbency and transparency when they are manipulated. The children used their senses to understand and make scientific observations.
The final experiment involved filling milk cartons with water to see how long it took for the various materials to break under the weight. Many predictions were wrong as we all waited for the materials to snap and drop the water filled containers. The children’s enthusiasm was heard across the entire school - they were so excited!
