1/2C Celebrates Antarctica Day

Our class has the honour of representing Australia in the Antarctica Day celebrations. This special day recognises when 53 years ago, on 1st Dec. 1959 -12 Nations signed the Antarctic Treaty, setting aside 10% of the Earth, “ forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes in the interest of mankind.”
As a legacy to the 50th Anniversary of the Antarctica Treaty, OUR SPACES initiated Antarctica Day in 2010. School students from around the world have been invited to design, create and send their Antarctica Day flags to the region to become a part of the celebrations. To enable us to design inspirational, reflective flags for the yearly event our class has been investigating facts about the Antarctica region and the history leading to the treaty and in turn its effects on our planet earth today and into the future.
Students have been extremely enthusiastic about this project and we would to especially thank the McCallum family for making this experience possible for us at Maleny State School.
